Creatively Enhancing Communication

Redesigning Milwaukee Public Television’s Website
Milwaukee Public Television
With year round service, and 116 hours of programming each day to as many as 2.1 million viewers, Milwaukee Public Television needed to create an online source of communication that would be one seamless resource for all the information that they provide. The result is a website that creatively enhances the accessibility and readability of the content, while encouraging opportunities for the growth of their popularity.

Who:
Milwaukee Public Television has provided communication to Southeastern Wisconsin since 1957. Their mission is to “educate, inform, entertain, and stimulate the imagination of adults and children alike.” Through their programming they strive to achieve quality entertainment that will benefit the community.

Why:
The reasons for Milwaukee Public Television’s website redesign were multifaceted. Previously, the user would be taken through a labyrinth of links to eventually gain access to a site that would allow them to donate. As a viewer-supported television station that depends on donations for maintaining its operations, they needed a direct and obvious way to allow those who wanted to support their vision to do so. Secondly, the site struggled to produce unity between each of its pages, lacking clear navigation, and discouraging its users from exploring the content. Lastly, they wanted the new site to enable them to remain relevant and current, simultaneously supporting their vision and values.

How:
Starkmedia was able to address these challenges while providing additional opportunities for expanding online communication. We began by redesigning navigation to provide quick and intuitive access to the content, focusing on directing the public to outlets that support them through pledges, membership, planned giving, corporate support, and auctions. With its new menus, the website now provides a direct link to MPTV Friends-the organization that partners with Milwaukee Public Television for accepting donations. Among other improvements were adding video capabilities to inform viewers and pique their interest in their programming, including podcasts to educate and entertain, and linking to both Facebook and Twitter to ensure new marketing opportunities. Also, with the addition of RSS feeds MPTV is able to communicate current information regarding their organization and related topics more easily than ever before.
